Might be possible if there has been a firmware offered that will increase the capabilities...what is your drive model # and name of manufacturer.

One second, let me open up Nero and stuff.

    PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-116

the read speed is 40X, no write capabilities... i am going to be playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with this drive, see, my friend "illegally" copied the game for me so i could play it too, but he put it on a DVD+R instead of a DVD-R.

Just buy the game yourself and you will have no problem.

DVD-ROM is an industry standard. All DVD-ROMs support DVD-R and DVD+R plus commerical presses.

If you are talking about burners, then that is a different equation.

If your friend didn't bitset the DVD+R to DVD-ROM, then that could be the problem.

Apart from that, a firmware update is your best bet. Otherwise, the only other explanation I can think of is that your DVD drive is too ancient i.e. pre-2001 to be able to handle the different reflectivity of burned DVDs.

Yep. Actually, the prices are usually so close it's better to just get a burner. Besy Buy has the Pioneer 111D for $39.99 and Tigerdirect has an NEC-ND3550A for $20 after rebate.
