hi i've been trying to help a friend identify an unknown pop-up. when she start's up her computer there is a little icon in the system tray, it is a red circle with a white cross in it. it says that windows has detected spyware and to click this box to download software to remove the spyware. but when i click on the icon nothing happens, and when the box is clicked on nothing happens. her antivirus/spyware is norton, and she has spybot S&D, which have found cookies on her computer, but nothing that is highlighted as a massive threat. if the icon is left, ignored, for a while it does go away. but the fact that something does keep popping up at the start up.

i know there is not much to go on here, but anything that could point me in the right direction.

    Ta

your problem is most likely a trojan that installed this program "silently". Nortan is hopeless -period-! spybot is okay but only finds spyware. In the future i suggest that you use a firewall like zonealarm because any program that tries to install or launch itself needs to gain premission from you first, this should stop this from happening again. To get rid of trojans there are two programs for this, Avast and ewido. Now, ewido was replaced by AVG some time ago and i have no idea whether it will do the same job but give it a go. This should solve your problem, if it doesnt tell me!
