    Hello,
I used WinTV PVR 250 and WinTV 2K to transfer 4 home videos and
VideoRe Do to edit. Now I moved them to Ulead Movie Maker 3se (was packaged with my PVR 250) to burn it to DVD. In total I have 139 min of videos and about 3.9G?. Set Ulead to SP and burn to disc.
Started to render and it indicated it was "converting video titles 1/4" Now, at this point it took 25 min to complete 3%. If there are no other steps, simple math tells me it will be a very long day to burn these files. Is this OK? or am I doing something wrong?
I have XP Pro SP1, AMD 1.66GH and all running programs are closed.

    Thanks for your input.
    Chris

    That's about right.
Because you're using VideoReDo to edit, the whole file must be re-encoded to correct the GOP size.
Ulead SE isn't the fastest either.
Better to take your edited files, and simply author them in something like DVDLab pro, which won't require them to be re-encoded.
They will play on 99% of standalones.
If DVDLab gives an error, then you WILL have to re-encode.
Better to edit the demuxed files in Cuttermaran, Womble, or tmpgenc mpeg editor first.

    Thanks for the reply Jim,
I don get it! If my captured file was an MPEG, after editing in VRD was still an MPEG, why would Ulead want to re-encode? I did not change any settings, maybe I should have change some options in Ulead.

You said: Author them in something like DVDLab pro, which won't require them to be re-encoded. Whys would it work in DVDLab?

You said: Better to edit the demuxed files in Cuttermaran, Womble, or TMPGEnc mpeg editor first. Are you refering to my raw/orignal files transfered via WinTV 2K? or VRD edited files. And if I use Womble to edit, whot do I use to burn without re-encoding?

    Thanks,

    Not quiting just dizzy

Mpeg is just a type of compression. It can be mpeg-1(VCD), mpeg-2(SVCD/DVD), mpeg-3(audio), or mpeg-4(avi).
A DVD spec mpeg-2, has a Group Of Pictures (GOP) that contains I frames, B frames and P frames. NTSC spec is one I frame per 18 frames (PAL is 15 frames), the other 17 usually made up of alternating B and P frames.
When you cut a video, you don't always cut on an I frame, nor do you want to. So you cut on a B frame in one portion, and a P frame in another, remove that chunk, and you no longer have a GOP of 18.
Ulead insists that a GOP be 18 frames, with one I frame. Because your edited video now has an invalid GOP wherever you edited, it must be re-encoded.
Something like DVDLab doesn't care if the GOP is perfect. It will simply author, and allow your player to play over the extended or shortened GOP. Most players handle this easily.

Cuttermaran allows frame accurate cutting, and uses tmpgenc (if you have it installed) to re-encode only the cut portions, to equalize the GOP. Womble does the same with it's built in encoder, as does tmpgenc mpeg editor. VideoReDo does not.

Ok, you will not belive this, BUT I got it.
So, for my application, I can edit with Womble and move on or use DVD lab and move on.

I still have Womble and DVDlab in my zip DR, I will put it to use.

    Thanks Jim,

    Chris

Once you get a handle on Womble, you'll use nothing else.
I use cuttermaran, but only because I'm used to working with elementary streams with AC3 audio. It's backwards from most editors. You cut what you want to keep, not discard, which can be difficult to wrap your brain around for the first while ;)

When you start getting into DVDLab for authoring, you simply won't believe the versatility. I'm not going to go into some of it's obvious advantages over most other authoring apps, but if you need a guide to get started, look here: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=220092

    Thanks Jim,
I did print your guide long time ago and still have it.
No worriers re Ulead, when I got home it gave me an error "Failed to reuse cache file" clicked ok and got another one" Reported 8x80041DA
(14252:1:0) Went on to re-install DVD Lab Pro (first time I tried I deleted it) from my zip drive and I think time has expired and could not get it going. Ok, moved on to re-install Womble and .... same. Time has expired. So I am not sure how to handle these apps, considering that I have not done anything with them in the past and I sure would like to try before I pay.
    No video playing tonight.

    Thanks
    Chris

Just redownload the latest releases of both apps.
Seems you may have other problems though, as they should never expire if you haven't used them, and ulead gave an error as well.

My E mail re DVDLab Pro
"Being a newbie to this video thing, in March some of the net board members recommended I try this app. I did install it , since at that time it was way to much to understand, within few hours I removed it from my XP OS . Well, I am back to take it for another spin, I did download this app again just a few days ago and try to install it but it tells me that the time has expired. So what is next?"
