Jerky playback on Xvid 1.1.2 final, 23.976 avi

As the thread title says, my avi uses the latest Xvid, and has 23.976 frames per second. I'm using Media Player Classic for playback, and have followed the guides here for un / reinstalling my codecs. That didn't help. Now the only codecs I have installed are Xvid 1.1.2 Final, and one for Mpeg2 (I think). I uninstalled ffdshow also. I cannot properly playback or convert these files to either vcd or dvd. I've tried using Virtualdub to change the framerate (got that idea from searching google), but that didn't work either. Any help (hopefully without using the words Windows and reinstall in the same sentence) would be great. Thanks.
