Hey all, While ripping a CD of mine using the --alt-preset standard switch with both these versions of LAME, I discovered the bitrate was different... I don't know if this question has been answered already, but does anyone know why this occurs? Any response would be appreciated.
That codec v3.90.3 is ancient - it is from the 90's is it not? The oldest one I have kept is v3.93.1, circa 2002. 3.95.1 and 3.96 iterations were quite slow on Q=0 (highest quality) encoding. 3.96.1 is wonderful! Great codec But to answer your question, any difference in bitrate I would expect to be subtle. I suppose the LAME team has changed the preset. Lately I am using VBR-MTRH at Q=0, VBR3, min 128kbs max 320kbs. Very nice encode, similar in size to CBR 192kbs. Regards
Thanks for the reply, greatly appreciated. I'm not sure when the 3.90.3 codec was released, but I doubt it's *that* old, as another well-known audio forum recommends it... And as for the subtleness... Well, 3.96.1 encoded a song at around 220 VBR, while the older codec processed the song with a 196 average... So the differences are fairly subtle, although some people could probably hear a difference. _X_X_X_X_X_[small]Metaleer[/small]
