I have a sony Vaio VGN-FE790P, lastweek re-installed XP Pro but before that figured the drive that came with it was bad because it would fail while installing with resource discs so I took my old Acer CD/DVD rom drive in it and worked fine for installing everything again, now the laptop is not reconizing the drive at all, its not showing up in 'my computer' and putting cd in it you hear it abd the lights on drive go off and on like they always did then just nothing.

Now like I said this drive was from my acer laptop and did not fit perfect in slot of vaio and would fall out of slot all the time, so I was always reinserting it.

    any ideas?

Another Question: if I used an external DVD drive will it work for re-installing XP since it will be using a USB connector?

try reseating the drive. possibility the drive has died if not seen by the bios.

I had a similar problem with my Toshiba a few years ago.I tried re-installing drivers and updating drivers.
In my case the drive was defective and i had to install a new drive.
Although i can tell you that if the machine has received any shock to it,ie dropped or bumped the small flat cable or connector can become dislodged as someone on this thread has already suggested.
    Good luck.

Well looks like its resolved, I ripped the laptop apart and messed with the connector and put the drive back in and it recognizes it now.

    thanks guys.
