i did a 'search' here on 4040b, and didn't get nothing, so don't harp about me not looking i have my firmware up to 303, but it will NOT burn at 4x onto dvd-r media. i have a different batch, but same brand of ul-tran media, 1x-4x, and i know i've burned to them at 4x before. being a total idiot, after recently re-installing XP, i had a blonde moment and thought i'd have to redo the firmware in the drive. duh. now, dvd-decrypter, alcohol 120% and the newest nero, or whatever the heck number it is, all 'see' my media as only 2x capable. is there a smart burn feature that can be turned off? i've heard that that, more than the firmware can cause some burn software to choke back the burn speed on dvd'r's. any help, greatly appreciated. (p.s. dual/layer 8x for sale locally for 130$ canadian, so dun know why i'm bothering with this, prolly cuz the media's still to much damn $$, soze i'm stuck with this for a couple more weeks) Spanx
Here is a couple of things to check if you haven't. In device manager, check all IDE channels are set for DMA if available, not set for PIO. Then remove the burner drive in device manager and reboot so Windows re-installs the drive properly. Last thing is some cheap-poor quality blank media that are rated 4x speed won't live up to that claim. You will be lucky you get 2x out of some of them. Jerry
Thanx Jery. My 2nd IDE is set to dma 2 for the cdrw and dvdrw, so it isn't that. My primary IDE has a 80gig w/d that keeps reverting to PIO, but that's a whole other headache I need some more dvd-r's, I'll get a couple that they tell me are 'for SURE' 4x'ers and see how that goes.
