I'd like to describe the problems I'm having with the new LG DVD drive that I bought. It's an LG GSA-4167B. It's been highly recommended, but I can't seem to get it to work. I checked the device manager, and it says that the drive is fine. I'm pretty sure I set it up as a slave, as I have a Panasonic DVD drive too. In Nero, I can't even see the drive when I want to burn mpg. I only see the Panasonic drive. I'm wondering what could be done to resolve this, that I haven't already tried. I'm not a hardware person, but I can do a little bit. Not sure what else to try. I think this is your problem: I was told by NERO tech support that the oldest version which supports the LG recorder is 6.3.1.31. I had an OEM of 5.5.9.14 and had the same problem. I downloaded a copy of IMGBURN to check the drive and it worked fine. Update your NERO.
I have the same basic problem. It can't be nero as I have a new version that came with the drive and it still acts up. I've also tried Imageburn and DVDdecrypter and still problems. I have managed to burn 1 successful +R disc with imageburn. Half the time it won't even recognise blank or burned discs. It has never recognized a blank DVD-R yet. I've tried it in another machine and it pumps out successful burns one after another. It has to be related to the cpu itself. The only real difference I can see between mine and my friends is the power supply. His is 350W mines only 250. I have more ram, his processor is only about 200mhz faster than mine and they are about the same age. I run XP home vs his XP pro. I am trying to get ahold of a larger power supply to see if that helps. All I can say is it works great....when it works. Let's keep this thread going and figure this thing out.
Rob, Some people in other threads have had the power supply problem and yours may be that. In Oiler-fan's case, I noticed that Nero version number at once because that was my problem. Hopefully it's his, too. It's a cheaper fix. If you check other threads here and at CDFreaks, you'll probably get more info about the power supply hassle.
Agreed. These drives seem to have a few quirks to them. I have done a bit more hands on testing. I installed an LG GSA-4040B multi drive that draws less amps than the 4167B in my pc. It will read the media that my 4167 can't. It will see all blank media and play all burned media. I test burned an ISO file successfully with Imageburn but all I could muster was 2x write speed. (It is a 4x burner with latest firmware) This leads me to believe that my 250w power supply can't provide enough juice to obtain full functionality. I didn't mean to disrespect anyone earlier. My intention was only to bring to light a seemingly possible origin of trouble. I have been trying to research this thing myself for 2 weeks. Cdfreaks is what turned me on to the power supply issue originally. The threads seem to die off just before the solutions appear. Unfortunately there are people that sek help but don't stick around to offer follow up info. My goal is to get supported fixes for any problems associated with the 4167B and blast LG's Customer Service for not knowing their own product and not offering support to the consumer. We shouldn't have to be on a forum site to find out why their product isn't working. Keep up the good info Howie, we all appreciate your help.
