After moving from desktop to laptop and being very dissappointed with the laptop dvd burner,,I am on the look out for a external dvd burner (or standard 5.25" to put in a usb 2.0 caddy) I want a model which enables bitsetting / booktyping. My old desktop drive was a Sony / Liteon which had this feature but was no dual layer,,,I want a dual layer this time around. Is there a list anywhere of dual layer drives that have it? Nobody who sells them has any info and the manufactureres don't seem to advertise it as a feature.
Most of the latest drives will booktype with a few exceptions e.g. most pioneers. Even the exceptions can be booktyped with hacked firmware from the firmware page. Here is a site that talks about booktyping and many of the drives that can be booktyped. http://www.booktypefaq.com/ Many will recommend the Lite-On burners. There are many models to choose from and are booktype-able...
