I'm guessing, but I'll bet that the "1X, 2.4X, maximum" appears when no disc is in the drive. The software only suggests speeds when a recognized disc is in the drive. Is that the case?

I dunno cos its not even reconising the DVDs that already have data on it. But 2day I may just buy a new one the 18x speed writers

it's not your drive that's bad.... and it's really not Nero.... it's definately what JoeRyan said it is.... you don't have a recognizable disk in your drive.... probably empty..... add your disk and you should see the speeds that you can select.

I have liteon's myself,73 and 93's Either one might do that every now and again.....this may sound simple, and you might have tried it already. Reboot....I know a lot of people that don't turn their computers off for a long time. Just a thought.
