I have this burner and I have never had a problem with it. It's great. perfect burns all the time. But the one thing that's really buggin me about it is that it's really loud. Even when I open it it's loud. When I burnt with my other burner it wasn't taht loud, relativly quiet actually. But this drive is as loud as sin esspecially when it's writing the "Lead Out"

Well i've had this model burner for about a week now, and it is not loud at all, in fact it is extremely quiet. so id suggest replacing it as there might be something wrong

I don't really mind the noise, like I said i get perfect burns not a single coaster yet. It's jsut a little weird. SO you're saying that it's never loud. Are you next to it when it's writing the lead out. What burning sofware are you using? I'm using Nero.

I have a Lite-On burner myself, but it doesn't work anymore. It sucks because I haven't even had it a year yet. It can only read some CDs, but it can't read DVDs at all anymore. I tried making backup copies of The Muppets Wizard of Oz yesterday and I got 2 failed burns. I wasted 2 TYs and that's not good because TY is great media. I just ordered a new Plextor burner. When I get it, my Lite-On is going in the trash.

I have the lite-on 1693s and there is no noise from it reading or writing. I am only about 1 foot from it. I have burnt 100 + dvd with it and it works great!

as the others have stated, my SOHW-1693S is not loud at all, it's relatively quiet actually, while NOT completely silent i have to admit~ :)

if the noise doesn't bother you much and you have nothing but success with ALL your burns on the drive, then you shouldn't really worry, but if it gets to the point of annoying you; get a RMA and swap it out for another...might be something wrong w/ the actual mechanism on the INSIDE that is causing the "noise"...dunno~

    docTY~
