Hello. I have a LiteOn SOHW-1693 KS0B disguised as a Digital Research DDVD16DL. The box and the internet all say it's suppose to be a 16x write speed drive, but Nero InfoTool and Burning Rom both say it's 8x and won't go any higher than that. I upgraded the firmware and it didn't seem to do anything. Any ideas?

    Thank you.

good chance your drive reverted back to PIO mode, it needs to be back on DMA...

    this is easily resolved here:

    http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking DMA.pdf

good luck~ i have that same drive and i know for a fact that Liteon 1693S can and WILL burn @16x, if you allow it to do so... :)

also, make sure you use GOOD MEDIA with it, that drive LOVES Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims, i get my BEST burns using those 2 brands of media...

PLEASE stay away from the Memorex/HP/Philips/especially [bold]TDK[/bold] and other CRAP that use CMC MAG as their manufacturer...you will not regret it~

Thanks for the reply. Both IDE channels are in DMA mode with no change in performance. If you have any more ideas, I'm all ears. Thank you.

if nero is telling you that you can only burn @8x, it just may be the discs you are using...what firmware do you currently have on the 1693? also, what is the rated speed for the discs you are using?

lower quality discs will ALWAYS result in a lower reported write speed with nero...

if you are using 8x rated discs, then good chance it will only write at maximum 8x, i have found that the 1693 is NOT a good drive to "overburn" on...meaning write FASTER than the rated speed of the disc...try a GOOD 16x rated disc..such as the Verbatim dvd+r MCC004 coded...i can get a full 16x out of these if i allow the drive to do so...

let me know, it's probably something VERY obvious u overlooked...like you have an 8x rated disc in there expecting it to write @16x because your drive is CAPABLE of 16x...just because it CAN write @16x, on a 4x or 8x rated disc, it will NOT :)

It looks like that's the issue. I won't know for sure until I get some 16x discs, but that all makes sense. Thanks for your help.
