LiteOn hack worked, but macro NOT disabled.

Well, I did come across a problem with my new LiteOn 5005. Not a major problem, but the hack firmware didn't cancel the macrovision. I'm a little disappointed because I bought this unit just for the purpose of it being hackable, as a back up to my ILO04. Also I've even tried catfreak's method of recording and it still didn't work. It still stops recording and says "copy protected." I did, however, get the 3 hour recording speed at least. Ho hum, now what to do. Maybe I'll just go ahead and invest in a DVD burner for the PC.

Update: I just double checked. The hack worked, I have region free and 3 hour mode, but macro is still not disabled - I even tried a few different discs and all came up protected. :(

I upgraded to firmware 1101.E10 (modified) and had the same "MV apparently not disabled" problem. What version of the firmware
were you using to do the upgrade?

    Thanks, Gary

From what information I've managed to gather over the last year or so regarding the evil Macrovision, I believe that if you use any firmware more recent that 098 the MV hack will not work .. Here are some archives of older firmware  http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/dvdrecorders/liteontips.htm

I'm having the same problem. I updated my 5005 with v1101 and the macro was not disabled. I have been reading and it appears you can not downgrade so is it possible to use one of the older updates that allows macro free, or can I alter the hex to allow it even after updating with the latest v1101?

    Thanks

I downgraded the firmware on my newer unit and upgraded the firmware in my older unit with the same 2 discs ... both work great now and I can even exchange unfinalized discs between the 2 (which was my main goal)

Catfreak How did you downgrade? Do you simply put in a CD with the version you want?

    Update:

Just to let you all know. I didn't pursue hacking my recorder any further after posting this thread. I have since bought a DVD Burner for my computer and it works wonderfully. I'm really pleased with it. I use DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and Nero with it and it doesn't get any simpler than that. I'm very pleased with my burns and the disc quality. I like it way better than copying with the standalone recorder. I think I'm going to give my new, unused LiteOn to someone for Christmas. Although I'll still have my ILO04 for personal use.

wayne_der .. Yes, all I did was create a drive CD and a system CD for my older recorder to upgrade the firmware. I saved the 2 CDs and when I purchased my newer recorder, I used the 2 CDs to downgrade the firmware to match my original machine ... no problems

KimTx what make and model burner did you purchase? Glad you like it ... and yes, that LiteOn will make someone an excellent Xmas gift .. but if I were you, I'd keep it .. it's much better than the ilo

Have a safe and happy holiday season

It's a LiteOn1693S dated Sept 2005. I don't know much about drives, brands, etc. but it seems to be working really good so far. I bought it blindly not knowing much about them. Well, at least drives aren't very expensive to replace.

I haven't quite decided about giving away the DVD Recorder. I'm still debating over it.

    [KimTx]----- or just info

I belive that on a thread on another site I read that the 5005 will have problems with a firmware higher than 1098. The problem seems to be a change in the hex flag locations. The region and 3hr mode seem ok but the MV hack will not be in effect because of this hex location change.

Can you go back to an older version? some say yes others have problems.

I have a ilo RHD04 and its a very good non compliant machine made by LiteOn it is not a + and - disk unit but many feel that the LiteOn is more reliable using + disks

Is your unit a RHD04 with HDD or the R04 without

    LCSHG,

It's an R04 - hacked. I've had it for a few months and haven't had any problems with it. I've been very pleased.

    Catfreak,
I upgraded to the 1101 fw (got fw from Liteon website & hacked it). I used a CD-RW to install the fw successfully. Before upgrade, my machine's serial number was 0102-1140-0098-F2SC, after 0102-1140-0101.F2SD. There are two files of the 1098 fw I got off a forum: LNFA1098.ES5 (for machines beginning with 0102) and LNHA1098.ES5 (for machines beginning with 0104). This is what i have done so far to attempt to "downgrade":

    1) Burn to CD-R: LNFA1098.ES5 -- rejected
    2) Burn to CD-R: LNHA1098.ES5 -- rejected
    3) Burn to CD-R: LNFA1098.ES5 renamed to:
    a) LNHA1102.ES0 -- rejected
    b) LNHA1102.ESO -- rejected
    c) LNFA1101.E10 -- rejected
    d) LNFA1102.ES0 -- rejected
    e) LNFA1102.ESO -- rejected
    4) I also tried renaming LNFA1091.ESU for step 3)
The procedures I have done for each of the above are:
    1) Open tray, insert CD-R, traverse 5005 menu to System / Restore, hit enter. I get prompted to either continue or cancel. I continue, the machine turns itself off, reboots, reads the CD-R, displays
"data" on the TV screenand spits it out.
    2) Hit System/Restore w/out CD-R inside. Machine reboots. I open the
tray, insert CD-R. The LVW5005 attempts to read the CD-R, displays
"data" on the TV screen, and spit out the CD-R
    3) Same as number 2) except I insert a DVD (commercial) in. Once it's
recognized, eject it and insert CD-R. Same result as #2.
    4) Same as number 2) except once, the unit is powered up, I turn the
unit off, insert the CD-R hit reboot from system menu.
    Here are my remaining options:
    1) Try using the LHNA version for my machine and repeat step 3
    2) Insert the 1101 fw, wait for machine to display whether to continue with upgrade, eject disk, insert 1098 update. Not sure this will work as the unit may not open.
    3) Use a hex editor to view 1101 file and see if we can copy a portion of the 1101 update to the 1098 fw file (this might kaput the entire unit, don't know.
    4) Take the LVW5005 out back and shoot it.
What concerns me is that the latest fw from LiteOn changed me from F2SC to F2SD (from what I've read, this would be a drive update). Do you think I could have a bad 1098 file? Is the 1098 same as the 0098 fw upgrade? I will try this stuff tomorrow. Spending way too much time on this...hopefully, one of my remaining options works out or someone comes up with a procedure that works. Do you happen to know where we can get a clean 0098 fw for the LVW5005 that begins with 0102? What were your upgrade / downgrade files named? Is it possible to get a copy of the files you used to downgrade? If so, please email them to me. My email is jgeep2@bellsouth.net Thanks.

I bought a used LVW5005X off of ebay, how would I know if the hacked firmware is already on the burner or not? The version that I saw was 0101.
