Spybot had a major update to it's core and dat files couple of days ago. A six minute scan can take hours. The problem turns out to be Resident shield in AVG. You need to turn it off scan then turn it back on. This is a known problem and both spybot and AVG are working on it.
Spybot now has a beta .dll file you load and replace the orginal. After a little feedback he will include it in another update. I tried it and it works. It's in the spybot forums. Seems they changed the way they check a couple of things and it conflicted with a couple of antivirus programs
