I hope you guys can help me here? I have the Samsung TS-H522U DVD Dual Layer drive and it's ok. The one problem I found is that it dose not have the bitsetting support like some other drives. This is a downside for making compatible media back-up. So I'm looking to buy another drive that dose and use my Samsung as a back-up. I'm looking for a drive that dose it all! One that supports bitsetting, writes DVD-R,DVD+R,DVD-R RW, DVD+R RW,DVD-R DL,DVD+R DL, and any other types not mentioned. If there is any reviews on such a drive can someone link me to the link so I can read up on it? Also where are some places to get good reviews on DVD writers? I like my Samsung though support for bitsetting software, or firmware is bad. I email Samsung and never received a response. I hope you guys can help? Thanks!
I read a review somewhere and the Samsung TS-552u got a great review: http://cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=259 You could check out other reviews as well I personally tried the Plextor PX-716A and the Pioneer DVD-A09sl (DVD-109 for OEM). The plextor has a bitsetting option with Plextools Pro, but that did not work for me. As for Burn Quality the Pioneer is getting better results and possibly does auto-bitsetting. I got about half the error with the Pioneer than with the Plextor, but it may be that Plextor like Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim more than Ritek.
I was wrong about the Pioneer, it only bitsets DVD+R DL to -ROM. Before you go shelling out cash for another burner, check out if the discs you burn with the Samsung play on all your DVD Players. I have some movie backups in -ROM that are not compatible with players that can play +r. That is not a media issue, because they are the same. Also, most players are more particular about the media that you use rather than the booktype, unless if you have a really old player. Also burn at slower speeds. I would recommend that you stay below 8x and use High quality Media. As for the Plextor Burner, the main advantage I see is the 8mb buffer, but that is not something to force you to buy an extra burner.
