Losing bottom of image in TMPGE AVI to MPG - Ratio problem?

I'm trying to convert something thats got subtitles, AVI to MPG, it looks fine when I play the MPG on the computer but once I burn it to a DVD and watch it on TV, the subtitles aren't being displayed (well half is, half is off screen). I'm using a PAL TV / DVD player, using TMPGE Xpress to create the MPG as it seems to result in a MPG with a smaller file size than TMPGE Plus (can anyone tell me why this is?). My Output settings in TMPGE Xpress are as follows:



I'm guessing the problem is occuring somewhere in the process of converting the AVI to an MPG, I guess I'm using the wrong settings. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? I've read several guides / threads and haven't been able to figure it out yet

 

This is because your TV set (All TV Sets) have an Overscan Area of anywere from 10% to 15% arround the Image that masks that much of the Frame...The overscan area is so you do not see the Jagged edges that are there when viewing Interlaced Video on a TV set and it also Masks the White Line of Distortion on the Bottom of the Screen when Playing Back VHS Tapes on your TV set...

To Fix this so that you can see the whole Image on your TV Includeing the Subtitles on the Bottom you would have to add Boarders to the Top and Bottom of the Frame but you have to do this while Keeping the Correct Aspect ratio....

If you tell me the Resolution of your Source AVI file then I can tell you how to resize it with Borders while keeping the Correct aspect ratio....

Hey im having the same problem. My size is 720x480. But with avi these numbers can vary greatly so can you tell me how I am supposed to figure it out.

 

So you are saying that the AVI file you are working with right now is 720+480 and you want to encode it to 720+576 ???

If so then in this Case it is easy to Figure out, Go into the "Filter" settings and select the "Resize" filter and were it says "Image position" select "Center Custom Size" and put in "720+480" as the Size and then encode like normal to Pal DVD...

This will add a 48 Pixel Border on the Top and a 48 Pixel Border on the Bottom while keeping the Original Aspect ratio..Now you will be able to see the subtitles at the Bottom of the Screen.....

If your File had a resolution of say "640+272" then you would set the "Center (Custom Size)" setting to "704+336" which would resize the 640+272 resolution to the Closest it can get to 720+576 while Still being in a Pal 4:3 Aspect ratio....

I usually use the Resolution/Aspect Ratio Calculator in "Gordain Knot" to calculate what resolutions I need to resize to....

This will add a 32 Pixel border on the Top and Bottom while Keeping the Correct aspect ratio so you will be able to see the Whole frame without any being cut off by your TV"s Overscan....

Hey again, I 've got another AVI that I'm trying to conver but this time its widescreen and the sides are getting cut off. I tried to find that 'Gordain Knot' thing but couldn't. The AVI's ratio is 768 x 432, can you let me know what settings to use to convert it corerectly so I don't lose any of the picture?

 

Hi, I am Assumeing that you are encodeing to Pal DVD Format??

In this Case You should set the "Center (Custom Size)" setting to "704 X 384" .....This should make it so you don"t loose any of the Image but the Movie will be in Widescreen format....

I tried the setting you posted but it's still cutting off the sides of the image, will I have to change any of the other settings apart from the Aspect Ratio?

 

Well then try 672 X 384 in the "Center(Custom Size)" setting...
You don"t touch the Aspect ratio, You leave it at either 4:3 or 16:9 depending on if you have a regular TV set or a Widescreen TV set....

 

I tried the new settings u suggested but it's still not working, but I've managed to get it looking half decent by just playing around with the settings, thanks for your help.

 

hey minion, i'm having this same problem, but mine are NTSC.

Would it be the same way? I'm wondering this because, the aspect ratio on mine are 640x480. When i type in 672x512 as the new ratio, it seems like it actually gets worse by making the subtitles go even further down on the picture in tmpgenc xpress.

What i was doing before is going to filter, resize, (center) custom size, and typing like 640x450...which gave me a black border on the top and bottom. Then when i burned to dvd it worked just fine. Should i not have done this? Am i losing resolution by doing this and i should just follow your way?
