hello i bought a western digital 320gb hard drive to use as a slave drive on my computer,it was the(ddrive(i was saving my DVDdecrypter backups there as well as some pics).Anyways I was going to going to save a dvd file into the Drive last week when the decrypter said file could not be saved there. There Letter and icon was gone.I went into devicemanager and it was listed there as WDC wd3200jb-00kfa0 anyways I tried something I read on another forum to get the letter back. I got the letter back but when I try to access it.It reads the disc in drive D is not formatted would you like to format now? Is all the stuff lost forever? Thanks ahead of time for the help!!
you need to run a scandisk (with the boxes to fix errors checked). this will fix any file corruption you might have. Just a few corrupted MB's of data will make the hard drive unreadable, but all the data is still there. If the scandisk won't work, you can try chkdsk from the command line. Example type in chkdsk d: /f in the run box. (d= drive letter of your external). If that doesn't work you can use the free "photorec" to recover all your data, it can recover from a corrupted drive with no problem.
