I have a MAD DOG MD-16XDVD9 and it had firmware v 1.f3 or something and I flashed it to 3.f3 and now I seem to have some problems that are kinda finicky. When I burn something whether it is data or video and I put the DVD back into the drive it will sometimes read it and sometimes want. I put the video, etc. into my standard dvd-rom drive and it is fine. Any video I burn plays fine on standalone dvd player without issues.

Can anyone tell me what I may have screwed up? Is there a way to flash back to the original firmware if possible or am I just missing something?

As to media I am using TDK made in Taiwan/Japan. Info tool shows them to be one of the best ones on the compatibilty listing. So I know my media is good.

    Thanks for any help.

Your media is OK. What type of problem? Jerky video?

Also, why did you update your firmware with the newer one? Wouldn't your drive read the disks without the update?
I beleive if you use the stock (first) firmware, then it flashes back sucessfully.

Not really jerky video. Almost like a bad burn so to speak. I burn it, put it in player and wouldn't play at all. DVD Player just kept saying "loading disc". Also found out it was an Imation not the TDK one. But reburnt it and played fine.

But the thing is I had the same issue on the dvd burner itself on computer. I burnt it and would play fine on standalone player but when I put it in the dvd -/+ rw drive it would not open it at all in windows. If I tried to access it via any software player or with dvd decrypter the disc would show as empty. Really weird. And that was with Imation. I know Imation sucks but never had that problem before. I wasn't running anything at all when I burnt the dvd. And sometimes the data dvds I burn have same issue. Sometimes burner will read it, sometimes it won't. Strange.

As for the firmware my brother told me it was better. Yeah better not listen to him next time. Drive was working pretty good before. Anyways the firmware was downloaded from the manufacture's website here: http://www.mdmm.com/optical_storage_drivers.php

    February 2006 MegaSTOR 16X DVDRW (MD-16XDVD9A2) 16XDVD9A2_FW_3F3.exe

I wouldn't even know where to find the stock firmware at. Any ideas?

    Thanks

As an afterthought if this helps. These are the burning programs I have:

    Nero 6.6.0.18 Ultra Edition
    Alcohol 120%
    CDRWIN 3.8H
    IMG Toolburn 1.2.1
    DVD Decrypter
    DVD Shrink

Usually what I do is do the DVD with DVD Decrypter, shrink with DVD Shrink and usually burn with IMG Toolburn. I know when I installed CDRWIN it asked about installing the ASPI drivers that come with it and I chose "YES". This was installed after I installed Nero which has it's own ASPI drivers. Could this also be an issue as well? I didn't see anywhere on IMG Toolburn where it would let you choose ASPI drivers if that is the problem.

And one more thing (sorry about editing so much).

I did find this firmware: 16XDVD9A2_FW_1F3.zip

That one file is the original firmware I had installed before I upgraded or I want to say this one is:

    1.F1 Firmware
    1.F1_31.01.2005.rar

    Found at this site:

    http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3520.html

I would say the 1.F1 is the original. It was stupid of me not to write it down beforehand.

    Ripper,

I have another suggestion or actually a finding I just went through. This is the configuration of my system:

Primary IDE Channel: (Flat IDE Cable - normal one you get when you buy drives)
Maddog 16xDVD9a2 (my dvd burner) - slave
    Western Digital 40gb 7200 2mb IDE HDD - Master

Secondary IDE Channel: (Round IDE cable, 18", i purchased A GOOD WHILE BACK - not sure if 100 or 133)
    Hitachi 60gb 7200 2mb HDD - Master
    Sony CD-RW burner - Slave

With this setup I am having the problems listed:
DVD Burner burns. Put movie in standalone dvd player and have issues (sometimes) with it playing DVD movie). I put burnt DVD back in my burner on computer and I start having the problems with it NOT reading the DVD.

    Now I have this configuration:
Primary IDE Channel: (Flat IDE Cable - normal one you get when you buy drives)
    DVD Burner - Master
    Sony CD-RW Burner - Slave

Secondary IDE Channel: (Round IDE cable, 18", i purchased A GOOD WHILE BACK - not sure if 100 or 133)
Old Creative DVD 12x DVD-ROM drive player - Slave
    Western Digital 40gb 7200 2mb IDE HDD - Master

Now in this new configuration I turn computer back on. Now I put the same DVD I burnt into my burner and woila it reads it fine and plays it fine, etc.

Even the god forsaken Imation burn I did that would not read before reads perfectly fine now as well.

Could my problem be my IDE cable then? It sounds real likely to me. Maybe I should just go out and grab a new IDE round cable and reset all this back up and see how it does.

BTW, Thanks for the patience on helping me with this. I am real computer savvy but this had me kinda stumped there.

Ok, don't roll back the firmware just yet. It is pointless updating unless you are having problems; like your drive not recognising media.

Imitation and TDK are both bad medias. You want Verbatim or Yaiyo Yuden.

I would replace your IDE cables and set it up as you have done (which is the way it should have been BTW).

    Get back to me.

Edit: Post a log of your burn for me to look through if you want.
