Recently, my computer has started taking way longer to rip and burn dvds. I'm on my laptop since I'm away at college, and it used to take 20 minutes to rip a dvd on it (DVD Shrink and/or DVD Decrypter), and then around 10 more to burn it (Nero). Lately, however, it takes over two hours to back up full dvds (encoding at ~850 KB/s), and almost as long just to burn them. I'm not experiencing slowdown with cd ripping/burning, just dvds, though. Does anyone have any idea wtf is going on? Why would this just start happening? And what can I do?
More then likely your DVD drive has fallen out of DMA mode and into PIO mode. When your drive is in PIO mode your CPU is doing all the work instead of your RAM. So place it back into DMA mode and you should see your times back to 20 minutes. To put the drive back into DMA mode go to the below link and follow the directions. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
