For starters, what are the specs of your computer? CPU, RAM memory, hard drive, DVD burner, and operating system? And, do you have any burning software like Nero?

whyyu03...welcome to AD. There is free software here at AD that will let you do what you want ... which is to convert a DVD-9 to a DVD-5.

Download DVD Shrink. It will do everything you need to do to prepare the DVD to burn. It even has an option that initates Nero, which eliminates a step for you. Go here for a good starter guide on how to use the Shrink S/W. http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink.cfm
For more advanced guides, with an online tutorial, go here: http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php

There are many programs to encode and burn backups for you DVD's, but this will get you started. [bold]The other part of it is your choice of DVD media.[/bold] The stuff you get at your local store will cause you problems. Most of us here use Ritek G04 that we buy online. www.meritline.com is a good place for USA folks. You will also want to have a few RW discs for tests so tht you don't make "coasters" out of your write-once media during the learning process.

Your computer sounds pretty new by the specs. Your NEC burner probably needs a firmware upgrade. Go into Nero InfoTools and post what firmware version it says you have(see Drive tab)? While you are there, check "Configuration" to see if all the drives (Devices) show DMA on. Also check the ASPI. You should show a green bar for both Nero and System. Post the results, OK?
