media player audio hookup

    i have an egreat eg-r1 player on the way,i have an onkyo 7.1 surround.i will be using this for watching mostly BD movies and dvd movies.my question is do i need to hook up optical or coaxial for surround sound or does it decode through the hdmi.thanks for any input
