I just got my new Plextor PX-708A 1.04 working perfectly, burned about 12 DVD's on various discs, writing on RW's multiple times to test my movies, and bam, nothing burns now.

My apps started not even recognizing the drive. So I removed my CD-ROM drive that was on the same IDE cable thinking that was it. Removed Intel App Accelerator. Made sure it was running in DMA mode 2. Still no luck. The DVD will either start burning up to 7% and quit or not burn at all.

Any other ideas on what to try? Could the drive be bad? It did start to click on an Optodisc... the last disc that burned properly.

    This error:

    'atapi'-(1)

A write error occurred. Make sure your media is approved for this drive.

A couple of problems, apart from poor media (Optodisc noteably) could be to blame. Try upgrading your drive's firmware. This link is useful for that: http://www.plextor.com/english/support/support_downloads.html#firm
You might also have a corrupted ASPI layer on your drive. I'd recommend downloading Force ASPI which would correct this and it is safe to do this anyway. You can get it from here: http://www.clonecd.net/aspi.htm
If none of that works you might have to think about Nero as being at fault, in which case uninstall it and use a different burning rom and see what happens. Good luck.

Thanks for the great info. Turns out it's a bad drive. Plextor says 8 blinky lights means I RMA it. Should I get a replacement or try a different drive you think?

Plextor is a good manufacturer. You seem to have gotten one that slipped through.

I'd recommend the Pioneer 106 - most reliable drive around.
