This is close to killing me! This is my first attempt at making a backup of a dvd. I've read lots of stuff and downloaded and installed several different programs. The only two I could get to work were Gear Standard Trial version and DVD Decrpytor. With each of these, I was able to duplicate my original DVD with no problem.

BUT with both programs, when I insert the blank DVD-R, it tells me that the tray is emtpy or that "medium is not present."

I searched my harddrive for ASPI and it says I have it - specifically, there are several and one of them looks like it downloaded with the GEAR software. Other versions of it I find on my system look like they are for Windows 98/NT, but I have XP.

    Here's what I have:
    WNASPI32.DLL
    WNASPINT.DLL
    WNASPI.DLL
    GEARASPI.DLL
    ASPI32
    GEARASPIWDM
    NtiAspi.dll

Do you guys think it's an ASPI problem, or something else? I have an HP300n cd/dvd writer. I haven't had problems burning cds (with NERO 5.0).

    THanks for any help!!

is your hp 300 a +r or dual format writer (-/+r). HP is usually +rw since they are one of the champions of that format. I suspect you have the wrong kind of media.

First of all, howdy neighbor! I'm a Wolfpacker ;-)

My writer is a "dvd writer/cd writer combo" -- it does read and write. Does that make a difference?

The software that came installed is Sonic RecordNow, but I can't figure how to use it to burn a DVD(it won't copy my disk and I can't figure out how to burn something I've *already* copied with another software -- does that make sense?).

    Thanks for the help.

dvd and cd are completely different. all cd burners will burn cd-r(most cd-rw). But dvd's come in three different formats-- dvd-r, dvd+r, and dvd-ram. Burners are specific to the formats that they can burn to--a dvd-r will not burn to dvd+r unless it is already specified (e.g. dual format burners like the pioneer ao6, sony dru-510, etc)

most dvd writer will also burn cd-rw also but this is not to be confused with dvd-r.

recordnow is a good program--to burn something that you have already copied, I would use data mode.
Check out these settings for recordnow: http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/user_guides.htm

I'm sorry to hear that you are a wolfpacker, some people have no luck. ;)

    Hey -
The RecordNow guide seems to be for "Orlogix RecordNow" and mine is "Sonic RecordNow" - the screens look different.
BUt I'm gonna try to burn it as data and see if that works. Will I be able to view it in a dvd player?
Also, do I want to burn them as vobs or iso? I have my dvd copied both ways. One way has a folder full of ".vob" files, and the other made an .iso -- which should I burn?

    THanks, dukie! ;-)

CORRECTION - one made a folder of .vobs and the other made a folder with two items:
something called RHW (with 'mds') on the icon, and a file called RHW.ISO -- so, which do you think i should burn?
    gracias,

the orlogix and stomp are the same. recordnow apparently has been bought by sonic and they are selling it.

the dvd movie structure is normally 3 types of files, vob, ifo and bup. These are what I burn to the dvd's. Decrypter does an iso mode which produces an image file or something like that which is supposed to replicate the contents. I find it much less useful.

The key thing is the settings as specified on the chris mccann website.

Did you get your media straightened out? If you got the media when you got the burner, I would go in raising a stink about how the idiots let me buy the wrong media.

Okay, I tried that and I get the same error message, so I think you're exactly right about the discs. I have DVD-R and I guess I should try DVD+R -- I didn't realize there were two different types. Why do they make two different types?
I bought the computer a few months ago and didn't get any blank dvds when I bought it. I just went in this weekend to get them. I asked the clerk if they "were all good" and she said "any of them will be fine." So I got the cheapest ones, which appeared to only be on sale because they were x2 instead of x4. But evidently, the HP burner combo is picky. I wrote to HP but haven't heard from them yet.
THanks for all your help. I'll let you know if the +R works!

    Hi bc429
The HP300n is not that picky not like the Optorite. It is just setup to work with what is known as + discs ( For a further breakdown on the differences checkout DVD formats at http://lordsmurf.com ) DVD formats are no different that Beta vs VHS or in the camera world Compact Flash vs Smart Media vs Memory Stick vs Secure Digital. I think I would go back to the store and ask for an exchange for the right media . If they are selling the media they SHOULD know the differences, ask the right questions to sell you the correct product

Thanks - that's what I'll do. I asked if they were all okay and the clerk said yes, but I think she thought I was asking about brands. I'll exchange today and cross my fingers!

By the way, my version of REcordNow is so different from the version on CHris McCann's cheatsheet; my version is 6.0 and it doesn't give all those screens and options. But I'm gonna try it anyway with the new discs.

    THanks everyone!

    Hi bc429
I have an HP100i whitch is +RW drive. The Record Now version is 3.5 designed by Veritas for HP. I am getting a Hp300i for Christmas. I don't know the Record Now version number with this unit. I will know after Christmas. Sometimes the software packages with the hardware are scaled down versions of the retail package. This could expalin the differences.

I'm so excited - IT WORKS!!!! It was the disc the whole time. I took the -r back and got +r. Ran into a guy in Best Buy who said he'd had teh same trouble, so I felt validated.

Came home and put the +r in and it worked like a charm. I used DVD Decryptor and burned the image that had the little "MDS" icon on it, and as soon as it burned, it started playing on my computer. I had it playing in the background and it just quit - so that could be a bad sign (or it could be some trial player that quits after 15 minutes of viewing)... But I feel this is a huge victory. THanks for all your help - everyone!
