Hey guys, Any of you seen Memories of Murder or even heard about it? I heard about it from my friend who is interning at UMVD. He said they showed it to him and he loved it. What do you guys think about it. I saw the trailer at http://www.memoriesofmurder.com and it looks pretty good. Its on my netflix list, but I am wondering what other people think.
I rented it a couple of days ago after reading reviews that said it was more real and truthful than the popular USA TV programs CSI and Law and Order. Well, the review must have been prepared by the movie's promotional department because I just didn't find any mystery in the plot. I am not familar with Korea's rural police departments, but their portrayal as a bunch of ignorant louts trying to beat confessions out of suspects based on the flimsiest of evidence to be of the "cookie-cutter" school of scripts. OK, so this kind of police violence may, on the surface, seem to have some "action" excitement but, think again as it doesn't provide that sort of interest either. On a positive note, the photography is well done. If you're looking for a good Asian mystery/police thriller, try the more satisfying "Infernal Affairs."
I understand what you are saying about a lack of action, but that is not what this film was really about. I felt it was more about the process of finding the killer, a more intellectual film than the tradional hollywood suspense or even Asian horror film. The film wasnt trying to beC Copycat, or even Ringu. And for the police brutality, i thought it was an interesting point on humanity. How these cops are willing to force a confession out of someone (out of a mental challenged teenager) in order to find the killer and be able to feel safe again. And at the end of the day, this was a film about a true story. From what I have read, it remain extremely close to the truth (which most films dont). So, if the action is lost, at least the truth is retained. And yes, I agree. The cinematography is amazing in the film. I think the beauty in the frames adds to the intellectual greatness of the film. Sorry, i havent seen Infernal affairs so i cant commment on it.
