I have a dell pc and i want 2 upgrade my memory. I currently have 512 ram. I would like to get another 512. I was just going to order from dell so i dont have 2 worry about compatibilty issues, warranty, etc. When i try to order from dell it say in () that i should order 2 parts cuz 512 ram actually comes in two memory sticks. Does that seem right or am I reading sumthing wrong?
basically you have to know whether the RAM you have now takes up two slots or one. Secondly you should know how many slots you have in your motherboard. Then if both slots are full then to be able to have a total of 1 GB RAM you need to buy (2) 512 MB. otherwise you will end up with a 256 and a 512 which would give you something like 768 MB RAM. Probably not what you are intending.
I have 4 slots, ddr 1-4. I can have a maximum of 4 gb. which seems like a little much for my pc. I have 512 with slots ddr 1 and ddr2 takin up. I would like to have 1 gb of mem 4 now. What it seems to me that dell is saying is that the 512 ram that I want has to come in two sticks???
Sorta sounds like they just want you to have exactly whats in there now ie. 2 x 256mb, by getting 2 more 256's for the one gig of mb. Filling up all 4 slots with 256's. Because if you can have 4 gig of mb theres no reason you need to have the 2 256's other than keeping same as installed.
I think i get it know. What i read is that i cant use just one slot at a time for my memory. If i use slot 1 i also have to use slot 2. I have to use slot 3 with 4. So if i want 1gb i have to add two 256 modules. Which i wouldn't mind doing except that dell quit making the 4600 series and now they only offer the 512 and 1gb upgrade. That's a problem cuz I only have the $ to buy if i order from dell. If i have to buy two 512 modules that will run me 160 bucks which is more than i wanted to spend. Does 80 bucks for 512 ram seem pricey to u? Anyway thanx for your help.
yeah 80 does sounds like alot u can get from tigerdirect for 30 w/ rebates a 512mb stick pc3200 ddr400
I did some checkin around. My biggest dilema is have a account with dell and thats the only way that I can afford an upgrade right now. If i was to spend 80 bucks at dell and get a new 512 module that they guarantee will work with my system and will waranty for life is that worth the extra 30 2 40 bucks?
Ustop - some memory must be installed in pairs; like 184-Pin RAMBUS; you would install in pairs taking up slot 1 and 2 and the remaining 3 and 4 slots would need continuity modules. However, your Dell 4600 motherboard should take SDRAM. Is your front side bus 800MHz or 533?? Do you have the Dimension 4600 or 4600C model? Let us know. If you have 512 now, add another 2 sticks of 256MB for slot 3 and 4 for a simple 60 dollar upgrade. 1GB is fine for gaming; that is what I use with a screaming 6800GT video card.
I have a 4600. My fsb is 800. Dell doesn't offer the 256 ram 4 the 4600 anymore. Only the 512 and 1gb. I see on the net u can get the 512 4 40 2 50 bucks. Dells is 80 bucks. If i want it 2 work properly I need to fill slote 3 and 4. Which means I would have to buy 2 sticks of 512 which wood cost me 160 bucks. Rip off or not? Dells ram sticks wood not be any different than whats on the net wood they. My thing is that I wood like 2 upgrade but I don't have the $. So I need to order from dell if I do anything. Would I be completely ripping myself off if ordered through dell or should I wait and save to parts over the net? Thanx
Buy it from www.crucial.com I think I priced out 2 sticks of 256MB for 27.99 per stick. The 4600 and 4600C 800MHz FSB take the same RAM; DDR PC3200 SDRAM .... check it out: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?model=Dimension+4600&tabid=AM Don't buy your memory from Dell. Buy it from Crucial!
Hey starbuck, i do appreciate the help but like i said b4 I don't have the cash to order stuff from the net, even 60 bucks. Thats why i'm stuck gettin stuff from dell.
Geez, I must have bumped my head. I do recall that. You must have one heckuva Dell Preferred Account!!!! They are always HOUNDING me to buy their stuff too. Oh Starbuck, you have a $10,000 limit and a ZERO BALANCE -- Please buy something!! DOH! Sorry, Ustop, I'm just adamant on what I would do versus the Dell way.
if you ever want to have 4gig of ram i would jus get a 1gig stik n free up the other 3 sell the other 2 256s to someone or something lol. seems pretty stupid to me to have 4 256meg sticks when you could just hav 1 1gig stik then youve still got room to upgrade even more if you should want to.
Sypher* -- that's a good thought if you were building a server and needed 4GB of memory asap on a box worth upgrading to 4GB; in my opinion, that's a waste of money. One GB is plenty enough memory for me as a Power User and I am sure it's 10 times more memory than you need, Sypher* or anyone on this forum. We run 4GB and 8GB servers here at work on multiple cpu boxes and don't use up the resources. The 2 "256 sticks" and my suggestion is best for economy at 55 bucks total and therefore, utilizing 1GB of memory. I really wouldn't call that a "stupid" idea....just economical. If you could cost justify the need for more than 1 GB of memory on a Dimension 4600 please tell me. I will listen. If you, for instance, were stupid enough to add more than 1 GB of memory on an outdated 4600, then you could suggest selling the 256 sticks and add your 1GB sticks for replacement, which would be pretty stupid in my opinion. Please be careful using the word "stupid" in this forum; someone may take offense!
Sorry, I didn't mean to step on anybody's toes my first couple of days. Although i have learned alot about pc's over the last year I'm steal pretty stupid when it comes to the technical stuff. (Sorry again 4 using that word). After asking my original ? and figuring out my ram style and the slot thing, I wanted to know if I would be brain dead 2 get parts through dell and u all basically said I would be. If only I knew u guys a year ago I could have the best pc on the block by now instead of this damn thing. Live and learn they always say. Thanx alot guys. Of course, I hope u realize this isn't going to be the last ? I ask.
