For anyone that has heard the news so far , its true the donation money that is used for methlabs was stolen by a rogue staff member and the site was hijacked and only 2 staff members remain, dont use methlabs.org anymore as it cant be trusted along with its blocklists, http://peerguardian.sourceforge.net/ this site is were remaining developers and admins have taken up. hope to see some of you guys there on the new irc channel.
If anyone is wondering whom took control over methlabs and stole the donation money he is a pic of S.O.B right here
Yeah but the scary thing is if you read the press release...the list updates of banned ip addresses are not under there control. So they could be changing the lists that block the people we love to hate...the mpaa and riaa...so we now could be vulnerable to getting are IP address seen... how nice is that???
The thing that is really scary about all this is simple. If you go to methlabs.org... it looks like all is well... then you get the email...saying the website is a fraud telling you to go to another website. So in away you don't know who to believe. At looking at this a second time I think the whole thing is a scam. My bet is that a hacker attacked metlabs and tried to take it over and failed... i mean the email he sent me is from a hotmail account.. come on now...I would say methlabs.org is going to be just fine.....
Do you use peerguardian? They run peerguardian software. They do all the updates for it...Ya know this is so sad becuase if anyone does any torrent downloading... a company called mediasentry has been going around and loggind people's ip address's and sending them to everyone's ISP's to get them to stop file trading. They also will actually download the file in question...then serve it...but they are not sending you anything...they will hit your ip address many times per second... sort of like a DOS attack. So if slows you down so much you can't download the file....peerguardian was one of only 2 programs that blocks it. This sort of way of stopping you from downloading files is actually quite common on piratebay.org for television shows. This is why something like peerguardian is such a needed item. I pray it is not messed up in any way but by this.. i think its ok though.
Methlabs was not hacked, a staff member stole the donation money used for hosting costs and forced out all remaining staff, and members including me, the new site hosted at sourceforge is the legite site and is were all the former staff and admins are located.
OK but the most important question is this? When I update peer guardian...the new ip addresses that it loads into the lising agent to keep out the RIAA and MPAA and whoever are they legit??? That is the main question i would assume they come from the main site?
Hmmmm. Well I guess i'll just be using blocklist manager until everything gets sorted out. Here's a link to it if anyone needs it http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=1
This should all be a major concern for all of us who file trade. I hate to tell you all but there is actually a little war going on the torrent sites. The mpaa proxies such as mediasentry are all over any file of signifigance launcing dos attacks on people and gathering ip addresses for later use. They are also dos attacking you even after you have finished what you are doing, legal or not. Don't take my word for it? Google it and see what i mean. Especially television episodes...its a war. Now with peerguardian going down....yikes....
http://bluetack.co.uk/config/sources.txt Use this link for the blutack lists and copy and paste these urls into the pg2 list manager, this makes it much easier to update the lists and manage them.
what if you have multiple ip ranges that are duplicates? Will peer guardian know this and sort it out?
http://peerguardian.sourceforge.net/forums/index.php? please come here to receive the lastest methlabs info and please take moment to sign up for the temp forums.
While I want to believe one side or another you can really never know in this situation who to trust. Bottom line is we all loose. There is other places to get the blocklists latests updates so peerguardian lives on I guess. Why would someone do something like this? Greed is a definete factor but I wonder how much money was involved? Bottom line is the people who are loyal to the software and to methlabs loose. Honestly, the whole integrity of methlabs is damaged now. You have to rival factions. If they took the money to run the servers and they have not been paid wouldn't the site be shudown? Something tells me there is more to this story.
http://peerguardian.sourceforge.net/pg2.html New version of pg2 out to reflect the changes of the past week.
so this keeps getting worse...there is 2 versions of peerguardian...its like a bad divorce... jesus.....my take on this... keep use peerguardian...just get your lists of bad ip addresses from multiple sources....I think both sides are doing all of us a dis service. We rely on you to help the p2p community stay protected... and look what both sides have done...shame on you both.
Its extremely juvenile to fight like little children that is what. It seems like its a bog fight over control and power. I don't know about anyone else... but peerguardian for me is a very important tool. Just look up companies like mediasentry. When an app like this gets involved in some stupid dispute, it shakes faith in it. Sadly a lot of people are not using peerguardian becuase of it. In the end are we going to have 2 peerguardians? Come on.
