Minor Glitches in Playback

I sometimes download movies from the Internet and maybe 1 out of every 3 or 4 has playback issues. The movie gets to a certain point and then hangs up for several seconds, sometimes even several minutes, and it sometimes happens a few times during the movie. I recently have been backing up some of my own DVDs and have ran into the same problem. I am wondering if it could be my DVD burner that is causing the problem (Generic DVD RW 12XMax) or if it is the way the DVD is ripped from the source that causes the problems. When I back up my DVDs I use DVD Shrink. Should I maybe try a different program to rip them?

Thanks for the welcome. Now that you mention it... I have used 2 different types of DVD-R media, Sony and Staples brands, and when I used to burn to Sony I noticed less DVDs that turned out having these hang ups then with the newly bought Staples brand, maybe 1 out of every 5-6 with Sony and now about 1 out of every 3-4 with Staples. As for burning speed, my DVD burner is a 16x and I usually burn at 16x but I have tried burning at slower speeds (8x and 4x) but it takes a lot longer to burn and still turns out with hang ups every now and then so I went back to burning them all at 16x.

I recently bought a very large hard drive that I use when I download movies or when I back up my own DVDs and what I'm going to do is keep the movie files on the computer until after I've watched the burned DVD that way if there are any hang ups I can watch the movie files on my computer and find out if there are any hang ups on the source files.

Please let me know if you can think of another reason why this problem would be happening. Thank you very much.

I would have to agree, sounds like media problem. It is recommended that you stay away from memorex and retail store brand name media. They buy their media from whoever will sell it to them for the cheapest price (usually CMC Mag which is crap). Use this http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and let us know the manufacturer name and ID. Try burning your sony's at 4x. They are usually good media. I would bet the staples dvd's are garbage.

I use only premium media (verbatum and taiyo yuden) and still usually burn at 4x to insure fewer chances of write errors. A few more minutes for a good burn is worth the wait.

Play the vidio folder on your pc with powerdvd6, windvd6, or windows media player to make sure the folders aren't corrupt or there was a problem with conversion.

Great program, thank you very much. The Staples media came back as Fuji Film (FUJIFILM03). I don't have any more of the Sony brand left to burn to, I ran out a few months ago and switched to the Staples brand. I guess I might have to switch back to using Sony. Thanks for all your help guys.

Oh, I just thought of another thing. Could it be that if too many system resources are being used while burning a DVD it would cause these little hang ups or do you think it is probably because of cheap media? My computer is usually using a lot of resources, when I burn DVDs I usually try to limit system resources by turning off unneccessary programs.

That staples media is better than average. Fuji is usually pretty good. If you buy your media local, maxell is good. It' recommended that you don't multi task while encoding and if your pc is not very fast and doesn't have much memory, you can shut down some proggy's in msconfig.

I'd like to add that I had the same issues. It turned out that I had to slow down the burner to half-max (4x) for it to stop causing glitches. I've used Memorex, FujiFilm, Sony, TDK, Verbatim and some GQ. GQ was the worst... TDK and FujiFilm have been the best for me. Verbatim DL discs worked great, but my JVC player won't accept them... but that is another topic altogether.

I don't know what make of burner you have but if it is capable try some good quality dvd+r media and booktype them dvd-rom. My brother has a JVC that is very finicky about playing backups but does ok with dvd-rom format.

Thanks for the Info... I'll try it.
My DVD burner is NEC2510ADL
My stand alone is a JVC-710(actaully not sure of Model#)... helluva player with all the audio options on it, but It's never liked burned CD's, but regular 4.7GB DVD's are no problem. I've run +/- R/RW on it, and never had it fail to read.

I'll give your recomendation a try... thanks again.

 

No guarantees but it's worth a try. Guess I should have read your post closer as you listed the make and model of your drive. Btw in order to booktype dvd+r media to dvd-rom with your NEC it must be flashed with modified firmware. Several have done so without any problems but that is entirely up to you.
