Hi, I been wanting to upgrade my 2nd pc at work(mainly to play oblivion) so i might by an 8400 gs. My main concern is the psu. I think it's 295W, would that be enough for the 8400? The pc is a sony vaio pcv-rs720g.
An 8400GS will play oblivion (just), but why buy such a weak card when there are better ones for no more cost? Try and find something like an HD4550 or ideally an HD4650, all will run off that PSU, assuming they fit your case.
Cool, I was mainly worried about the psu, but it seems there is no need to be. I will look into the suggested cards. Much appreciation. EDIT: My pc supports PCI express x16, while the hd 4550 cards at newegg are PCI Express 2.0 x16. Is there anything else you can reccomend. What about an 8600 GT? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130297
The 8600GT is old and slow, very slow. It is still miles faster than an 8400GS, but your best bet is either http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125250 , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131133 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102820 if you can afford the latter, it's almost 8800 levels of performance.
regarding the 4550, this link says it requires two 6-pin power connectors. http://www.guru3d.com/article/ati-radeon-hd-4550-512mb-review/4 However, other links say that no power connectors are needed. Which one is it?
