Just found out my media player doesn't support MKV files of which I have about 50, so, what's the best way to convert them to H264 AVI?

    Thanks :)

What player do you have? Are you sure it will play AVI with H.264(usually Divx/xvid is found in AVI files)? Does it play MP4?

Yes, the program is fee and very good, I use it a lot. However, depending on the player's capabilities, converting and losing time and quality might not be necessary...

That's what he said? I thought he said he wanted a cookie..

MKV is just a container. He says he wants to convert to H.264 AVI. H.264 is not common for an AVI, like Divx/xvid.
If the player is capable of H.264 playback, but not in an MKV container, then the video could be just simply re-packed into a different container, without re-encoding, saving lots processing time and video quality...
But I see you got it figured out, don't need my help.I'll leave you guys alone.
    Good luck.

Provide a link to that player. From your post it seems it does not support MKV.

Sorry we seem to be out of sync with replies ;-)

No doesn't support MKV & I can't get it to play mp4 either & Handbrake doesn't convert to an AVI or Xvid container - any ideas?

    Info was here https://iomega-eu-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iomega_eu_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=22029&p_sid=iL4MK8Uj&p_lva=22034

But I think I'll take your advice & try to return it - the WD looks a good one!

Thanks for your help, much appreciated :)

From the jr.com page that I found, and Amazon, com the player does not support MP4 or MKV...it only supports AVI(Divx/xvid), or MPEG-4 part 2(which is not the same with mp4). Your player is just Divx certified. The mp4 playback might be misleading(read some reviews here;or maybe need to be a mind reader or something to figure out what codecs in an MP4 work):

    http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-ScreenPlay-Plus-Multimedia-Player/dp/B002PY7LM4

If that's close to the price you paid, it's a waste of money. Buy the WD player and and external hard drive for less money and more features. It'll save you time and headaches.

For now, you can convert those MKVs to AVI(xvid) using Any Video Converter.
