Does anyone know how to convert mkv files to avi? I tried that w/river past video cleaner pro but it didn't work. The program doesn't it even with the correct metroska codec pack. I tried mencodec but the new output video is not compatible with my codecs. I know there is a simplier and different to do it. This mkv format is really a headache. Again, thanks guys for your help.
Converting mkv to avi really depends on the mkv. Is the video stored as VfW or in a native mode (MPEG-4, AVC, Real Video, etc.)? Is the video CFR or VFR? The audio, is it vorbis, aac or what? If the mkv contains CFR VfW video and aac, mp3, AC3, etc. audio then you can simply remux to avi. I would not call mkv a headache, trying to convert from mkv to an outdated crappy container like avi might be, but that doesn't really reflect badly on mkv, but rather on avi.
