Please excuse my ignorance of this type of thing but I'm really new to it. Modding the xbox is something I've been wanting to do for a long time but I'm finally headstrong on doing it now. I've looked all over the forums for info but I'm having problems getting the right answers, but afterdawn has been the best place to go for any type of question so here goes. I'm planning to buy a modchip and a 200+ GB hard drive. I just want to mod the system for running backups games, copying games and dvds to the hard drive, and running emulators and roms. Thats it! I have no need to put it on Xbox Live as I have 56k and have no way of getting broadband out here. I also have no networking tools or knowledge so thats pretty much out of the question. My xbox was bought new about this time last year so its a fairly new version. Now I really don't know what it means to flash the chip or bios and what locking or unlocking the hard drive does and haven't found any clear answers as to what it all does. I do know that it seems that I can do this all with auto installers which is good news to me. So far it seems that Slayer's is the best. If anyone knows different please let me know (I won't bother you for links. I'll be more than happy to find them myself). Do they really do all that for me? The reason I ask is because I've seen pre-flashed chips and if I can do that with an auto-installer I'll get a cheaper SmartXX one. Also, after I get the modchip and hard drive installed by this electronics whiz buddy of mine, will I be able to just pop the disc in and run it, or is there more to it? The main question is after reading all that, what do you think I need to know. Also any tips would be appreciated. Like I said I've searched the forums for a while and the answers I needed either wouldn't be clear or would be to technical. The things I want this for are seemingly simple things so I hope you guys would help. Sorry for this all being so lengthy and thanks a lot for the help.

have you read through all the tutorials over at www.xbox-scene.com? they have by far the most xbox modding information over there...read through some of the tuts over there, and if you still have questions just let me know. the more you teach yourself the better off you will be once the xbox is succesfully modded.
Ok I need to know this. 1. Can I flash the chip or bios with an auto installer? I need to know so I know whether or not to buy a pre-flashed one or a cheaper Smart XX. 2. Which is the best auto installer? Thanks.
