So I guess I will start by explaining the problem with my old monitor. Randomly I hear a click coming from the monitor. The screen will go black for a split second then the image returns but zoomed in, like 110% but it zooms back to regular display size in a few seconds. I am guessing its on its death bed and I am in the market for a new montior. Along that line of thought, I need a replacement. I went shopping last night at CompUSA and Circuit City but found interesting results. It seems that lcd has become very, very popular and affordable. At each store there were about 20 lcd options and about 3 crt options. I would love an lcd for many more reasons than its small footprint on my desk, but I am worried about the accuracy of the display. I do art, digital photo editing and other things that require accurate display. Correct me where I am wrong, please, but I believe lcd does not display greys well? I have a dual display lcd/crt at work so I can see a difference. Is this still the way it is or has lcd gotten copetitive in that category? And if not, where the heck am I supposed to go to get a quality crt monitor? I even double checked on Cnet and all they had were listings for lcd. Have they given up on crt as well??? Help please! There is absolutely positively no reason to get a CRT anymore these days. Being a gamer I too defended CRT until the past 2 years. since 2004 LCDs have improved 10 fold. If you are worried about the grey/black issues look for monitors with high contrast ratio such as 2000:1 even as high as 4000:1 and possibly higher. Response times have also improved so much that you can find LCDs with 2MS response times. Color corrections have been improved and eye strain reduced. LCD is the way to go.
One reason to consider CRT over LCD, two words: Native Resolution. If you run an LCD outside of it's native resolution, it simply doesn't look as good. Therefore if you're a gamer, you're going to be dealing with program x running at 1024x768 while you may prefer to run program y at 1280x1024 and your desktop at 1152x864 for example. It doesn't really "hurt" anything but it doesn't look as good outside of it's native resolution. If this isn't a problem for you then everything else Joshewah would be correct.
Don't worry. I recently switched from CRT to LCD and I guarantee you will be very, very happy with the level of detail, color balance etc.. I do a lot of photo editing and paint work and there is nothing that could persuade me to go back to CRT.
