I have a problem that has just about exhausted me to the point to stop trying to make back-ups of my DVD's. For the past couple months now, just about every time I try to make a back-up, it comes out as a coaster instead. I have the following programs: AnyDVD, CloneDVD 2, Magic DVD Ripper, DVD Shrink, Nero 7. All these programs are up-to-date and full versions. I have also replaced my DVD-ROM, replaced my DVD burner but still no better. I am running Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, Intel Celeron CPU 1.20 GHz with 512 MB of RAM. My RAM is full but I have burned close to 275 movies and all turned out great. I use Maxell discs to burn with. Have also used TDK and Verbatim with great results in the past. I have even re-formatted my computer to see if that helps but no it didn't. I always turn off my anti-virus and firewall when making a back-up. My back-up movies will freeze, play jerky, the picture will be distorted or not play at all. Have also replaced both my hard drives back in June 2005. Any ideas????????????????
Maxell's are very good if made in Japan, the Verbs are also excellent but I wouldn't recommend the TDK's. Slow your burn speed to 4X, watch your compression levels...not familiar with CloneDVD, so I don't know if is has any advanced analysis or error correction capabilities. Also don't use adhesive labels.
@engraver In addition to locoeng's suggestions, I would hope you are DISCONNECTING from the internet, when turning off your anti-virus and firewall. You can run these programs and see if that helps. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/292257 Also defrag. I've heard some of the Maxell MIT -r's have not been so great, although in my experience I've had good luck with the +r's. I do try to seek out the MIJ ones though. You can use DvdInfoPro (you have to wait a few days for the free version) to check for errors on your burnt discs. I believe Nero also has some free tools, but not sure what it's called.
Yes I have it set to burn at 4X. No I am not connected to the internet while burning either. I do defrag before I make a back-up. I have even went to the trouble of replacing my video card as well. Any more suggestions??????
Have you updated your firmware? Your programs are all up to date? Both Anydvd and Clonedvd2 have had recent updates. Nero 7 apparently has lots of bugs that still to be worked out. (I don't use Nero, so you may want to do some research on that). Just doing movie only?
I have checked and the firmware is up to date. I do have the latest versions. Yes I am doing only the movie when backing up. Everything was fine then just went to making coasters.
99% of the stuff you tried (like replacing video card) isn't going to matter. Logging off internet, probably useless I cruise the web all the time while burning all sorts of discs. Disabling firewall, probably useless. I leave mine on 24/7 365 and know many other that do as well. Your RAM is fine, your software is OK, etc. #1 thing I'd check is make sure that your burner is using DMA and not PIO mode. Sometimes a jacked up disc can cause your drive port to fall back to PIO, and this can cause all kinds of problems.
Ok, have you tried DISABLING DMA? Nero does suggest that in troubleshooting. Also, a friend of mine told me that this program (ftp://ftp6.nero.com/General-CleanTool.exe) worked when he was having Nero issues. It uninstalls Nero fully, not like windows will, so you can start fresh. It even removes the registry entries so have the reg code ready to re-install with. If this doesn't work, try another burning app. If that one works, the problem is Nero. If it also fails than you probably have a problem with XP itself.
Here's what I would recommend: 1. Is your burner firmware up to date? This can cause issues with any newer media if your firmware isn't up to date. 2. You said you recently switched to Maxell's. What's the media code on these? Again if you try step one first, this shouldn't be a big issue. I would still want to see the media code first. Even then I would still try another batch of media just to see if you didn't get a bad batch. 3. Try Shrink than DvdDecryptor or ImgBurn. If that works than your Nero 7 could be corrupted. I have seen several posts with people having issues with Nero 7. I've been sticking with 6.6.0.18. Big things we need to know are the Media code of those Maxells, burner, and firmware.
Pretty sure the firmware's been tried. Maxell discs are fine, should work fine in any burner that's not complete junk. The fact is that engraver has replaced drives, video card, reformatted the HD, etc etc so the hardware side is pretty well been covered. I'm thinking Nero myself now that I know that DMA was enabled on the writer. I did not like Nero 7, and like beltline, stuck with 6.6.0.18.
Ok, I have re-installed Windows again and tried to make another movie but still no luck. I have included the log file from Nero. ======================================================================= [17:14:30] NeroVision Log created (Date: 03/16/2006) [17:14:30] NeroVision Processors: 1 (Intel) [17:14:30] NeroVision OS: Windows Windows XP [17:14:30] GCCore Detected DirectX Version: 9.0c [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: ACPI Fixed Feature Button [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel PentiumIII Processor [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Programmable interrupt controller [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Advanced programmable interrupt controller [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: System timer [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Direct memory access controller [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: ECP Printer Port [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Communications Port [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Communications Port [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Standard floppy disk controller [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: System speaker [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: PCI bus [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: System CMOS/real time clock [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: System board [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Motherboard resources [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Motherboard resources [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Numeric data processor [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: ACPI Power Button [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: PS/2 Compatible Mouse [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: COMPAQ MV540 Color Monitor [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Floppy disk drive [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID Keyboard Device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant consumer control device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant consumer control device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: HID-compliant device [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: CD-ROM Drive [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: CD-ROM Drive [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Disk drive [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Disk drive [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: ISAPNP Read Data Port [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Printer Port Logical Interface [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI (SMC1211TX) [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82815 Processor to I/O Controller - 1130 [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82815 Processor to AGP Controller - 1131 [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82801BA LPC Interface Controller - 2440 [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442 [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444 [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82801BA Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 244B [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Intel(R) 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Primary IDE Channel [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Secondary IDE Channel [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: ACPI Uniprocessor PC [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: Volume Manager [17:14:31] GCHW Node added: avast! Engraver it saids the burn process completed successfully. What error are you getting. You say coasters, but are these burning problems coasters or playback? I believe they are playback since that is what you originally posted. I still say it could be a Media issue or your Nero install is corrupted. Answer a few more questions. 1. Did these issues start when you switched media. 2. Do they play okay on and dvd players, or have you just tried one? 3. Have you tried using Dvd Shrink and creating an ISO than using DvdDecryptor to burn the ISO. Try that and bypass nero. If you try this and still have an issue than It will exclude Nero, and I will have to say it is a bad batch. It will only take you 8-10 minutes to create the ISO and 14 minutes to burn. So it should take you 25 minutes or so to test #3 out. But this could narrow the problem down significantly.
This is what is going on. I will go through everything that I have done. ======================================================================== 1. I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 to make backups of my movies. I have had great results with maybe 2 or 3 bad burns out of 50 or so. While using these programs I used Maxell, TDK, and Verbatim DVD discs. They would play back in any DVD player and Playstation 2 machine with no problems. Now when I make a backup DVD, the DVD players will play fine for a while and then the picture will freeze, the sound will become mismatched, and get a bunch of distorted pixels and the screen. I will try to replay the DVD and it comes out the same each time in the same place, even on another player. 2. I have tried DVD Shrink with Nero and the results are the same. I never get a error window just one the says it has burned successfully. Then when I play them back they are no good either. 3. Ran DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor and and made and burned a ISO file and get the same results. 4. I have made .avi files and they play fine on my computer but turn out the same after I burn them. Have a friend that has the same programs do the same as I have and they all turn out great as mine used to. I am not a newbie at this as I have been backing up for a while. Just totally stumped now. As I stated before, I am running...... Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 Intel Pentium 3 1.2 MHz 512 MB RAM I have installed a new DVD-ROM drive, DVD Burner, purchased a new Phillips DVD player since this has all started 2 months ago. I replaced these as I was having the same problem with the ols units. Have tried these discs on Panasonic, Phillips, Sony, and Toshiba DVD players. Have just re-formatted again last weekend and I always defragment and then re-boot before I get ready to burn. When I burn, I always disconnect from the internet then disable my anti-virus, shut down my firewall and any other programs that are running. When I start to burn, I just walk away and leave the computer alone. Everything used to be great for the last couple of years and then just went south. I have scanned for virus's and don't have any. Ran SpySweeper and came back clean too.
Well it sounds like you are doing everything you are supposed to. Your firmware looks up to date. You did burn that Maxell Ritek at 8x which I would rather not see until we get the problem worked out. You stated: Is this a problem you are having with every burn or 2-3 out of 50?
I'm at a loss than. These are all symptoms of bad media or out of date firmware. Along with all the others things you have already tried I'm not sure where else to go from here. Anyone else have any suggestions?
I agree with most if not all the advice here and my own advice is to refrain from high speed tactics like burning on a fly or any other method that spells out rapid back-up. Option for quality burn with the back up software of your choice. The wait time is not long at all when you think of the overall results. Disc skipping is due to poor media choices as well recording from a poor source like an already damaged disc or corupted file. My rule of thumb is go with a media source and company that takes out the time to impress on the likely consumer that you will receive quality back-ups or recordings to your DVD. The only two companies that I have found to produce DVD's and make this claim is Verbatim and Sony. If you take notice the others only come with labels that read like minor instructions, if that? or if your lucky "hearsay" which I find I can't trust. No quality claim? This then blatantly spells out no accountability for the outcome, good or bad. If anyone is serious about quality don't risk it with cheap media. Look at the wear on your burner for the time spent backing up movies to poor media with suspect outcome or just plain poor copies. When I make a back up copy I am not looking for a coaster, I wish to duplicate as much as possible the quality found on the original source DVD or file. Each time I back-up a copy or file.
