Can someone point me to a good site that can help me adjust and change settings on my PC to make my modem work faster. I have read alot about how the default seetings can be altered to get the most from a modem. I think my modem is just way to slow. I know dial-up is not fast but is it normal for my PC to take 10 minutes just to look at a site, not to mention half an hour just for a 2 or 3 MB file? If any software might help please let me know and if free even better. Thanx.

@djbandit - do you have any firewall? and if so is it activated?

@glitched - there are no such thing as download accellerators - they are just spy/adware bundles

    STEER CLEAR!

djbandit, what speed is your modem as in 28.8, 33.6 or 56k. what are the phonelines like in your area as different makeups of wire for telephone lines can slow your transfer speed.

Well I have a 56k, not sure about the phone lines. Most likely copper, I hope that's what you mean. I have Win XP with SP1 so I only have that firewall so far.

what anti-virri/anti-spyware proggies do you use? your slow speeds could be do in part to malicious software at work, downloading and uploading info on your compie. a firewall would be a good idea.

who's your ISP? AOL is notoriously slow. i'm just taking a guess, lol, as to that being your ISP. what browser are you using?

There's a way to speed up dial up without having to get broadband (or so they claim), The company is called OnSpeed & claims it can add an extra 5K to your download speed, here's a link so you guys can check it out:

    http://www.onspeed.com/en/

It sounds good and with dial up 5k is a great improvement, it also seems legit as i remember seeing a add on the TV for it a bit back.

Well I have AVG 7 free, SB search and destroy and ad aware. I use IE. My connection is running good now. Was wondering if changing some setting on the PC would make it better.

i think he is talking about removing stuff in the background so can go faster but that has nothing to do with transfer rates.
