Can anyone help me, i have just bought a used motorola sb5101e modem off ebay and when i connect it to my cable internet connection it will not connect to the internet. I have been told that i need to get a MAC Address for the modem for it to be able to connect online. Does anyone know where i can get a MAC Address from and do they know how i can put the new MAC Address onto the modem. Any help with this matter would be much appreciated.
You have to register the device with the cable company. You need to contact the cable company to add or change a cable modem on your service. There Is no way around it other than to contact the cable company.
mightyg, then how are you getting on the net as can only use 1 cable & 1 dsl modem to get on the net?
ddp.......i already have a cable modem off the cable company......my service from the cable company is legit.....the modem is for a neighbour who is not legit....but his cable line is still active so he bought a modem but has been told he needs to get a mac address for it to work, im just trying to give him a hand with it thats all.
Your friend heard wrong. It's HE who has to give the cable company the MAC address of the modem. The MAC address of the modem should be on a label on the modem somewhere. If it isn't there you will need to connect it to a PC and ARP for the address. Just because there's a cable TV signal running over the line doesn't mean that the internet service is active.
