I just got a letter today saying that Fox Films is working a case against me for copyright infringment and telling me that if I do not seek an out of court settlement they will pursue legal action. Does anyone know about how much one of these settlements is?

It depends on how much you've downloaded/shared...

If you do decide to settle, watch out for their scams. They'll just redirect you to a "settlement center" and have you pay around 3 grand. At this time, I would seek legal advice and see what you can do. A good site to get help: http://eff.org

In the mean time, I would stop using (if any) peer-2-peer software. Also, I would see what laws in your country/state and see if you can counter-sue their claim and dismiss the lawsuit.

Do you have any idea if the money has to be paid all at once or if it can be paid over a period of time?

If you do decide to settle, it's up to you and the respresentative at the "settlement center." Most of the people Ive read about have negotiated from around 5 grand to approximately 3 grand. I do not know if they allow you pay it in increments. You'll need to contact someone from the MPAA or one of their "settlement centers."

As I stated before, consult an attorney and check the laws of your country/state to find additional information.
