Like andmerr stated, you can only burn it to a DVD compliant format IF only is an MPEG-2 format. To do so you need an encoder.

There are good (with acceptable quality) "one-click" encoders which not only encode your movie but also prepare it for burning to DVD. Try AVI2DVD or VSO DivXtoDVD

I am using VSO Divxtodvd to convert the file and burn it, but the problem I have is when I go to watch it on my tv, the sound and picture quality is horrible. Any advice?

have you got avicodec. If not please download it and run your file through it.

then post the results of the file.

once you post the results we should be able to suggest why.One reason already may be if the quality of the source file is crap encoding to mpeg2 probably wont improve it.
