I have created some .mpg files by recording TV programs with Arcsoft TotalMedia 3.5. This records ok and I can replay the mpgs thru TotalMedia and Windows Classic media Player. However when I try to watch the mpg thru VLC nothing happens. Other programs which should open mpgs give an unsupported media error. According to GSPOT the files are mpeg-2 transport stream and mime type video/mp2t. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to solve it please? In addition to playing with VLC, I want to be able to add the mpg to an editor such as Pinnacle Studio.
FWIW, I had this problem with .TP recordings and some .TS files. Never found a way around it directly using VLC, but when remuxed into the .MKV container it would play them ok.. GDSMux which is a part of Haali Media Splitter can change the .TS container to .MKV. There's no conversion, just demuxing and remuxing. I don't know whether the other program you mention can handle .MKV containers.
