my computer keeps locking up

my computer keeps locking up and i have to use the tower to turn it off then i have to boot it to turn it on again, my dad has said i should restore it, will this work?

 

Have you checked for viruses and malware?

 

I would do a scandisk (with the box to fix errors check) on all your drives. If that doesn't work check that your drives are set to DMA and not PIO. If you are using IDE drives, make sure 2 ide components aren't hook up to the same cable as masters or slaves at the same time.

If that doesn't work, you might want to start looking at your hardware. Sometimes the built-in soundcard has been known to cause slowdown. If you have any usb card readers/flash cards you might want to unplug them.
