Take it back (if you can) and buy a good dvd burner that has great customer support (firmware upgrades). I highly recommend the BenQ 1620/1640 or if you can afford it, the Plextor PX-716. Lite-ON dvd burners are good, very reasonably priced too :)

Check the properties of your drive and where there's a "recording" tab, make sure you've checked the box where it says enable cd burning with this device.

If this is a I/O magic 1008UI good luck, I purchased this drive and it has been nothing but a problem, even sent it back to the mfr. Got it back and it still screwed my computer up. Would burn some disks okay and other not. Opened up the case and it is almost impossible to pry the drive out.
