Im not sure exactly what it is, but sometimes when I turn my xbox on ill hear a kind of grinding sound and then seconds after ill smell something burning. I opened it up to see if I could notice anything but everything looks fine. If I try to follow the burning smell on the xbox I think it leads to where the power plugs in, so I think it may be burning some wires there or something. The xbox still runs, but if it keeps doing this, im not sure how much longer it will run. I have a V 1.0 xbox with orriginal bios on it, running evox from slayers auto install and about a week ago I installed a 120g seagate hdd. Please help if possible, thanks.

I got some time and looked into my problem. It seems that it is doing this because it is an old system. The V 1.0 and 1.1 xbox PSU's are faulty and "can cause a fire", this happens just from everyday wear and tear of the system.

Microsoft sent new power cables to those that had the older systems in 2005. The cables were said to prevent "rare electrical occurences that could cause a fire". This actually was not addressing the problem though since the problem was in the faulty PSU. These new power cables prevented fires but made the problem worse and fried PSU's.

anyway, thats my problem and the solution is to replace it.

    THANKS Microsoft

The new power cables prevented a fire setting alight and killing everyone in the house, they did nothing to save your Xbox! This saved Microsoft hundreds of billions in lawsuits!

Yes, I recieved the new cable in the mail a while ago and thats what im saying makes my problem worse. I use my old cable and it doesnt burn/spark any as it did with the new cable. I now just make sure that my xbox is turned off whenever I leave it.....

And yeah chunk, they did this to prevent fires and lawsuits. I think it would have been best though to actually fix the whole problem, instead, they saved their own ass and said F the consumer. So instead of approaching it in a way to help themselves and the consumer they just slapped some duct tape on the problem and said there ya go....
