Severe newbie, and I'm afraid I may have been mistaken.
I thought I would download a video file, use a single program to burn it to a DVD-R, then play it in my stand alone DVD player in the US.

Is it possible to download video, then use one program to burn it to DVD?
If so, which file format should I be looking for?

From what I've seen after trying to burn several different files is that I'll need to use 3 or 4 programs to do burn video to DVD.......

It depends on what quality you want, what time you are willing to spend and how much money ud be willing to fork out. TMPGEnc can encode files to DVD, then you can use something like DVD Lab Pro or TMPGEnc DVD Author to build the DVD, then in my opinion, Nero is best to burn the authored files! Look around the guide section on this site and also use Google searches to find guides on DivX to DVD etc...

It's not as hard as it seems at first!
