First try holding down the rewind button when you plug it in to load the non default firmware [iPod Firmware] if you can manage to load that firmware you can restore your iPod which will fix the problem, as iPod Linux just runs on your hardrive and can't really ruin your iPod.

Does it charge when its plugged in?

Have you tried restoring it? Do you know if there is any battery life left? I would suggest using the HP USB Storage Format tool which will reformat your iPod, if the iPod udater doesnt recighnize your iPod.

Ipod linux can ruin your iPod! I got it on my video for the first time and it erased EVERYTHING, even the OS!

But it isn't 'ruined' its just a little messed up, you can just restore it and the iPod is as good as new. So what I really meant by ruined is it won't brick your iPod.

Waymon3X6 - if you do it correctly, it won't mess the iPod up, but it can be tricky to install.

I'm not sure if the installer is for the Photo iPod is supported for Windows [which I'm assuming your using]. I don't have a Photo iPod so I wouldn't be able to test it myself. You could always give it a go with the installer that is provided here:

    http://ipodlinux.org/Installer_2

The worst that could happen is your iPod won't start properly. You can fix this by just Restoring the iPod with the Apple firmware. It is also stated in the wiki for iPod Linux that installing Linux [bold]does not[/bold] void your warranty, since it is only a program on your HD, and the iPod is advertised as being a device capable of carrying your personal data, in this case its iPod Linux.

    @ Darljello
My iPod updater didnt reciginize my iPod at all, and neither did my computer, it saw it as an external harddrive.

Is your iPod running okay? It can't be updated while in Linux mode. If it isn't running properly you should still be able to force it into disk mode by holding Menu and Center to reset the iPod then while the Apple icon is visible hold Play and Center until it says 'Do Not Disconnect'

If this doesn't work for you, you can reformat the drive as a FAT 32 system, you may have this option availible to you in 'My Computer' if you right click the drive that is your iPod. If not you can download a reformatter from HP. I don't have the link handy at the moment but if you're having trouble I could dig it up.

That would be correct, it just all depends on how broken his iPod seems to be. I sort of have a feeling its working fine but his computer isn't recognizing it because he's in the Linux OS. We'll just have to wait and find out.

@ Dark Jello, I did finaly get my iPod video back into runnign order about 2 months ago, i had to use the HP USB Format Tool to get my computer to actully recignize my iPod, not as a externaly HD, and then I ran the ipdater and restored my iPod.

If any one has any problems with their iPod not being read by their computer, or if you have a folder with a frown and the iPod support link come up, try restoring your iPod or if your comp doesnt recignize your iPod, then use the HP USB STORAGE FORMAT TOOL, it will format yoyr iPod into FAT32, just like DarkJello said.
