I just took this DVD drive from another PC (the DVD drive worked fine in that computer), and put it in my rig. I turn on Windows, and i can see the drive on My Computer. Here's where it gets intrinsically gay - At first, whenever I put any kind of disc in (blank CD and DVD, and a full CD), My Computer would lock up, I would close that, go back to My Computer, and find the DVD drive to not be there anymore.

As of now, the drive dosnt go away when I insert discs, but it seems to lock up my PC instead. I just upgraded the firmware on the DVD drive, with no positive results. I got this to work in my old PC somehow, I just dont remember what I did (Divine Intervention?). NEC's website has no Drivers (they didnt even have the frimware updater, had to google for that) IF anyone has an idea as to what the hell I should try next, help would be much appreciated. Also, sorry for all the writing :D

That drive does not appear to support DVD-/+ RW DL media. It does support DVD+R DL according to the specs.

Latest firmware is 2.1A, but you said you already had it.

If the media isn't your problem, I would check the master/slave settings and I normally put the DVD as Master on the secondary IDE channel.

the NEC is now the master, and it works fine, but when I put my old drive as the slave, it has the exact same problem the NEC used to have. Dosnt matter because I only use one drive anyway though :D

Strange things can happen with different combination of drives. I once had a Plextor CD Burner and got a Plextor DVD burner to go in the same computer. I could never get them to work together, so I just ended up with the DVD burner and a normal CD Drive.

Wow. I checked the IDE cable connecting both the drives to the motherboard, and found 4 of the wires torn. Replaced the IDE cable and now have no problems :D
