I have a NEC 6650A DVD RW in my Dell XPS laptop. it has been a year a have bought it. it was built in with the system. 2 months ago something wierd started happening. the dvd's i copy work fine but copy very slow even when i select the maximum speed, i.e 8x. I even tried alcohol. when i burn an image and when the process starts it says, "Illegal speed 8x, burning at 2x." wat could the problem be. could it be one of the updates from windows or something else. i use verbatim dvd-r 16x. i used them before and they had no problems. nero, alochol and other burning softwares have the same problem. SLOW BURNING.

    Please help.

    mazamil,
Go into Device Manager and look for "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers". Click on it and go to Secondary IDE Controllers, Right click that and go to Properities and then Advanced Settings. Current Transfer Mode should be Ultra DMA Mode 5. If not then go back to Secondary IDE Controllers and right click the drive and then click uninstall and then re-boot. Windows should then re-install the drive properly.

If it is in PIO Mode and you have to uninstall the drive I suggest you get a free Registry Cleaner and clean out the registry of any conflicts as they can cause the OS to Downgrade the burner's DMA Mode 1 grade for every 6 errors it has

i uninstalled it and carried on a reboot. when i saw it again it was the same thing as before, i.e Transfer mode is ' DMA if available' and current transfer mode is 'Ultra DMA Mode 2'. tht is for device 0.

for device 1 it is ransfer mode is ' DMA if available' and current transfer mode is 'Not applicable'.

You are in DMA so OK. Below is the approved media list for that Burner. The 16X Verb's are not listed but the 8X are. Since there is no update at the NEC site you might inquire w/ Dell to see if they issued a firmware update. I really think that it does not recog the 16X blank media and that is why it burns it at 2X. You might try cleaning the DVD Burner and see if that helps. I would suggest that you check the IDE cables but since this is a Laptop that just might void the warranty. Tald to Dell and see what they say
