This is my new drive the NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A 1.03 (ATA). My question is can I booktype it using the function in DVD Decrypter or do I need to D/L the firmware hack for this drive as it doesn't bitset to DVD-Rom? The current firmware v. is current as of last week D/L'd from the NEC website.

Whoa there LOCOENG, we are all here in our free time & choose to help!

Saying that, I have a feeling that you can booktype with these drives, but I am not sure. Have you actually tried doing it on a test disc yet?
I would just use the hack & then you should be OK.
I only use +RW discs, so I get very few coasters (virtually none to be honest, well OK then 1 coaster so far out of 400 odd burns) & it allows flexibility.
The latest version of alcohol allows you to booktype, but it does not compress.
I've never had to booktype yet, as my entire dvd player collection plays all my burns with no probs.
Give it a whirl & see what happens. I love to jump in with both feet.
I have been at Afterdawn for nearly 2 years now & have only asked 2 or 3 questions. I like to find out things through trial & error.
    Kind regards,
    Pulsar

And again thanks for the reply...

The whole reason I asked is because I read all the "you can ruin your drive mumbo jumbo, with a bad flash", and I didn't want to do that.

The sarcasm was just that...sorry. I try to jump on others problems as soon as I can, so when 3 days went by I was bummed.

Pretty sure you should be able to booktype your drive, I have the older ND3520A updated to latest firmware (so now a ND3520AW), and it booktypes with dvd shrink through nero.

Anyway, hope that was some help to you

From what I have heard, that hacked firmware may be obtained at cdfreak.com.

I've noticed that booktype tab in dvd decrypter. It's grayed out on my pc for that dvd decrypter NEC setting, but allows me to set up booktyping with all my benqs.
