i started getting a power calibration error a little while ago when trying to burn cd's

ive now got to the stage where my drive doesnt even load cd's properly and it cant write them either

the drive spins up then clicks then spins then clicks and so on until i eject the disc

funny thing is that its not doing it with dvd's

i can read and write them ok

can anyone give me an idea of what could be wrong?

Firmware? If it's ancient, maybe it won't recognise the very latest 52x blanks.
Might work okay with 32x blanks, circa 2003, you'd have to see.
You could find them at Blockbuster, they have dusty blanks that are not big sellers...
Other than that, simplify. Pull all the different Rom drives out if you have 'em - just go with 1, master on its own controller. No slaves. Check UDMA, with slaved drives sometimes it's tough.
But if your burner is truly pooched, don't worry! New ones are inexpensive.
They're TOO cheap actually (plasticky crap) hence I recommend only Plextor.
    Regards

im using the same blanks i was using before

it cant read any cd's really

i guess it must just be dying

the thing that gets me though is how can it read dvd's if it cant read cd's?

do they use a different part or something?
