Another i drive i thought wqas good was the BenQ 1650
First: I'd go with the Plextor px 716 which is perhaps one of the finest drives produced. They are expensive. Second: A tie between the Benq 1640 and 1650. These drives will booktype the plus format to dvd-rom,just like the plextors. There were no benq drives at that site alienator posted. Third: Probably a lite-on Fourth: Sony DRU 820A Fifth: Pioneer Sixth: NEC Anything else, hard telling what you'll get.Lots of low quality drives out there, and some have very few updates to keep up with the newer media that comes out. Anyone wants a quality drive/higher compatability on stand alone players/frequent firmware updates/and very few coasters, check out those top 4 on my list. I have 7 pc burners, and there are variations between them.Main issues: stand alone compatability and too many burn errors. The quality drives will prevent a lot of headaches!
yeh the two sites i posted unfortunately don't sell BenQ drives which are vgood but i see you didnt mention the liteon drive as good, since it actually is very good, (im not sure of model name but its sumthing like -02c at the end and is retail and also has lightscribe £35)
I'm not up on the newer lite-ons. Some of those latest model#'s I am unsure how they perform. Especially when getting into the dvd-ram and lightscribe models. These would be totally different drives, and I don't hear of too many posts of members with those types of drives. Now on some of their older 16x models, they are very good booktyping drives. These model #'s should be very good: SOHW-1653/1673/1693 Now with the newer ones like: 160H6S and 165H6S????? Burner quality will vary between different model #'s. Benq? I got 4 of them all booktyping.I have 3 different model#'s:1620/1640/and 1650. Phenomenal burners/very high stand alone compatability/low error backup scans/and perform better at a faster burn speed. Now for the quality of their drive with the lightscribe-1655-lots of good comments for them. For their Dvd-ram drive? No clue, totally different drive altogether. Benq makes some drives for other manufacturers: I/O Magic/ Philips/ Sony DRU-820A/ Plextor PX 740A/and more. That says something good about your drives when plextor is using them in their budget line of drives. Low cost, but excellent performance. A lot of members are jumping on the newer 1650 and quite a few threads on that drive.
lol dont mention i-o data, i used it for my old nec 3530a drive to flash it, the fw is supposed to work and that fw is the whole reason for my old drive not working, btw the new liteon drives have relly good speeds, which i also found surprising, but i think there is also one that reads -ram at 16X
