Okay; so; I'm gettin' dsl on mon. and all; so I'm gonna setup a network....well one of my comps has xp (newer one) and the other is win98SE (old piece of crap)anyway; those two will be hooked up to dsl; but what i'm gonna do is get a diff OS for the win98SE one because everytime you boot up that comp it just freezes and says windows explorer is not responding (that never happened until a month ago) so;my questions are: 1. Since this comp is and old HP Pavilion 6630; should I try getting win2000 or xp?--->im leaning toward xp because I know a guy that's got a comp 'bout as old as mine and he says xp works fine for him on it.... 2. Now; in the case that I end up getting win2000; I want to know if there's a way to get the windows XP silver theme on windows 2000 because that's the best theme ive ever seen come w/ a computer imo..... P.S. i know this sounds dumb; but the conditions on question number two are HUGE because if i can't get the xp silver theme on windows 2000; then I'll install xp on the old comp because I absolutely HATE the classic windows theme...(no offense to people that don't) Lastly; I know some of you will tell me that xp won't work on a comp that old; but I've read many success stories on people installing xp on old comps and they say it works great; plus my old comp meets the sys req. just enough to run xp freely....even if there is a tiny bit of lag w/ the os; i dont care; I just want to be able to install an os more stable than win98SE 'cause that thing is a p.o.s.---> windows explorer just freezes up right away on startup; and it's not due to my sys specs; 'cause we bought that comp new years ago and ran win98SE PERFECTLY; but over time it's gone to crap TIA; Halen5150 Also; sorry if my questions hard to understand; I'm typing this in a hurry
my suggestion is go with XP, 2000 is good and everything but it's too crash happy and XP is far better anyway. Before anyone joins and shoots me down for saying that i used 2000 for a long time on a PC or two, and when it works it works (but still not a fraction as flexible as XP) but it's far too crash-happy. Plus it's far less 'there' as regards drivers for stuff. As to themes/desktops/screensavers etc you're spoilt for choice out there, there's also programs such as WindowBlinds etc. XP can run quite well on older machines too. Win98SE is still great but the answer you want is there already, if you're having grief with 98SE don't bother with 2000, go straight for XP.
nice one, glad it helped. i've still got a 98SE machine, i rarely use it but it's bulletproof, it just works. The onl thing it won't do is to recognise my wireless card but that's not a fault of the OS but of the old PC it's installed on. Doesn't matter as that PC doesn't need internet access anyway
Hey Man! You were right! it worked!!!! In fact; i'm typing this message right now on the old computer! XP Pro works great on this! In fact; I've even got the DSL on it now!! This rules man!! Thanx abunch! With Eternal Gratefulness; Halen5150
