well cannot connect to xbl can happen for a number of reasons, your DSL does not support it (check with your company) comcast works the best for me. or go to settings and network settings and ip and select automatic for the ip.

I'd start with the simple stuff, check your network connections!

how do you have it all wired up? your xbox needs to get out onto the internet so you will be connected directly to a modem/ router or linked through a PC using ICS (connection sharing). both of these should allow you to ensure your xbox is getting a connection (or not) and depending on the settings you may need to change some settings in the xbox dash. Like the person before me said ISP's can be an issue and also every network card has something called a MAC address. sometimes the mac address is limited to one device so you can make the xbox emulate this device etc.

also was the xbox brand new? or did you buy it second hand, if second hand you never know if its been banned for cheating etc in the past..

more than likely though its a network issue or ISP so start there, if your still having problems then post details of your set up. (router make etc)
